Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these medications need to be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting generally have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Experts propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural support.
