A minimum of 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.
A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were executed at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
